 SHE had the viewing nations in fits of laughter in her role as the snobbish Hyacinth Bucket in the Nineties comedy Keeping Up Appearances.

But Patricia Routledge is also an established and award-winning stage and screen actress with a CBE to her name.

Patricia will receive a CBE in the Queen's New Year's Honours List for services to charity and theatre, but who is she? Here’s what we know.

Who is Patricia Routledge?

She was born Katherine Patricia Routledge on 17 February 1929 in Tranmere, Birkenhead to mother Catherine and father Isaac, who was a haberdasher.

During the Second World War, the family lived in the basement of his shop.

She was educated at Mersey Park primary School and the University of Liverpool and acting was never a career choice as she graduated with Honours in English Language and Literature with the intention of becoming a headmistress.

How did Patricia get into acting?

Involved with the University of Liverpool’s dramatic society, she was persuaded by academic Edmund Colledge to pursue an acting career.

After she graduated from Liverpool, she trained at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School and launched her career at the Liverpool Playhouse.

She worked there as an unpaid stage manager at the Liverpool Playhouse she made her professional debut in 1952 in A Midsummer Night's Dream.

She then made her West End debut in comic opera The Duenna in 1954.

In 1965, she made her Broadway debut in How’s The World Treating You playing three characters, having starred in the production in London.

Three years later she went back to New York to star in Darling of the Day at the George Abbott Theatre which won her a Tony award for Best Actress.

What is she most famous for?

Patricia made her film debut in 1967 alongside singer Lulu and actor Sidney Poitier, as teacher Clinty Clintridge.

But her biggest success came when she landed the role of the bossy and snobbish Hyacinth Bucket – pronounced Bouquet in the BBC sitcom Keeping Up Appearances.

It was a role she played for five series and four Christmas specials and captured audiences all across the world.

What else is she known for?

Patricia starred in Talking Heads, a series of dramatic monologues written for the BBC by acclaimed playwright Alan Bennett.

He wrote three especially for her – A Lady of Letters, Miss Fozzard Finds her Feet and A Woman of No Importance.

She also starred as the lead character in Hetty Wainthropp Investigates alongside Lord of the Rings and Lost star Dominic Monoghan.

Is Patricia married?

No, she never married nor had any children.

She lives in Chichester, West Sussex and has been awarded an OBE and a CBE.

She is a patron of the Beatrix Potter Society and in 2008 received a Doctors of Letters degree from Lancaster University for her contribution to drama and theatre.
