He was absolutely brilliant as Emmet in Keeping Up Appearances! Now 81 years old, he is currently enjoying retirement.
Although he has varied career, David Griffin will be mostly remembered for his role of Emmet. His character was the brother of Elizabeth Warden, and moves in with her following a messy divorce. This relocation places him next door to the series' central character, the socially ambitious Hyacinth Bucket.
Upon his arrival, a misunderstanding ensues when Hyacinth spots Emmet collecting milk from his sister’s doorstep while draped in a towel. Jumping to conclusions, Hyacinth believes the neighbourhood's morals are in decline and contemplates moving, much to her husband Richard's frustration. The confusion is cleared up when Hyacinth realises that Emmet is Elizabeth’s brother.
Emmet’s profession as a pianist and director of the local amateur operatic society catches Hyacinth’s interest. Determined to be noticed for her supposed singing talent, Hyacinth seizes every opportunity to serenade him. This relentless pursuit turns Emmet into a reluctant participant in her musical ambitions, leading to his constant fear of encountering Hyacinth and her impromptu performances. His attempts to evade her and her notorious "candlelight suppers" are a recurring comedic element in the series.
Emmet’s interactions with Hyacinth are characterised by his sharp wit and clear disdain for her, adding a layer of humour to the show. Despite Hyacinth's attempts to impress him, Emmet remains unimpressed and often expresses sympathy for Richard, wondering aloud, "How does he live with her?" This dynamic provides some of the series' most entertaining moments, showcasing Emmet's struggle to avoid Hyacinth’s overbearing nature.
Josephine Tewson, who played Elizabeth, noted in an interview for the BBC’s Comedy Connections series that Emmet’s introduction gave the show a significant boost. Unlike many characters, Emmet isn't easily intimidated by Hyacinth, which adds a fresh and engaging twist to the series' humour.
Emmet Hawksworth’s character, with his blend of fear and sharp-tongued humour, enriches Keeping Up Appearances with his entertaining attempts to dodge Hyacinth’s relentless advances and her misguided belief in her own musical talents.
