A much-loved comedy actress pulled out of an event focussed on a "special part of her career" due to ill health.
Dame Patricia Routledge, best known for her comedy role as Hyacinth Bucket in the BBC sitcom Keeping Up Appearances, was set to speak at the Assembly Hall Theatre in Tunbridge Wells on June 8.
At the event - "Facing The Music: Patricia Routledge in Conversation with Edward Seckerson" - the actress was set to "lift the curtain on the lesser-known musical side of her career" accompanied by "rare and cherished recordings".
The dame, who has lived in Chichester since 2000, also trained as a singer and had a successful career in musical theatre, both in the UK and USA.
On June 7, the venue announced on social media that the show had been cancelled.
"We have been informed by Patricia that she will no longer be able to perform due to indisposition, resulting in a loss of vocal power and clarity.
"Patricia wanted to pass on her profound apologies for not being able to appear as planned and wanted to re-assure everyone that she was receiving excellent medical attention."
Routledge's achievements in musical theatre include a Tony Award for her Broadway performance in the Styne-Harburg musical Darling of the Day and a Laurence Olivier Award for her performance in Leonard Bernstein’s Candide.
In 1988, Routledge embarked on a successful tour of her one-woman show, Come for the Ride. In 1992, she further showcased her versatility by playing Nettie Fowler in the highly acclaimed production of Carousel at the National Theatre.
In December, the actress was pictured enjoying a meal at Chez Moi in Bognor Regis.
Chef and restaurant owner Michael Newton-Young said of the 95-year-old: “She was bright as a button – brilliant and lovely. She’s completely compos mentis – sharp as a tack.”
