Josephine Tewson, best-known for her roles in Keeping Up Appearances and Last Of The Summer Wine, has died aged 91, her agent has said. The British sitcom actress died 'peacefully' at Denville Hall on Thursday night.
Her agent, Jean Diamond of Diamond Management, said: "It is with great sadness that I can confirm the passing of Josephine Tewson. Josephine passed away peacefully last night at Denville Hall at the age of 91."
From 2003 until 2010 she starred as Miss Davenport in Last of the Summer Wine, written by Keeping Up Appearances creator Roy Clarke. In 1988, she teamed up with Ronnie Barker again to play Jane Travers in his sitcom Clarence.
In an interview in 2008, she told The Independent the role was one of her biggest professional surprises. "If you're Julia Roberts or Judi Dench you expect people to write parts for you, but not little old me," she joked.
In 2012, Tewson launched her one-woman show Still Keeping Up Appearances? and toured across the UK until early 2019. Her father, William, was a professional musician and played the double bass in the BBC Symphony Orchestra.
Her mother, Kate was a nurse, the daughter of Haydn Morley who captained Sheffield Wednesday in the 1890 FA Cup Final.
