Actress Patricia Routledge attacks BBC for dropping detective series

The actress Patricia Routledge has accused the BBC of being run by "10-year-old children" after it decided not to recommission her detective series.

The former star of Keeping Up Appearances, who played suburban snob Hyacinth Bucket, is furious over the way the corporation axed Hetty Wainthropp Investigates.

Miss Routledge, 79, claimed that the BBC did not have the decency to inform her of its plans for the popular series, which aired on BBC1 between 1996 and 1998.

"We were betrayed by the BBC," said the actress in a newspaper interview. "We finished series four of Hetty Wainthropp, we were told there was going to be series five.

"But no word ever came - how rude. The BBC is run by 10-year-old children."

The actress, who was awarded a CBE in 2004, surprised the industry by speaking out against the BBC a decade after the series was removed from the television schedule.

Hetty Wainthropp Investigates, which ran for 22 episodes, followed the antics of a "sprightly" and "intelligent" retired working-class pensioner living in Lancashire who went on to become a private investigator.

Miss Routledge, who has also been honoured with an OBE, took the title role alongside Derek Benfield, who played her patient husband, Robert.

Have your say: Where is the BBC going wrong?
